THE PLOT THUS FAR

In this heartwarming comedy, minor leaguer Carlton Garrett (Justin Timberlake) takes an unexpected road trip to track down his estranged father, legendary baseball player Kyle Garrett (Jeff Bridges) when Carlton’s mother (Mary Steenburgen) becomes sick. Knowing his charming yet painfully immature dad’s likelihood to disappoint, Carlton enlists his on-again-off-again girlfriend Lucy (Kate Mara) for emotional support. Once reunited, Carlton struggles to deal with the series of misadventures caused by his father’s antics, including missed flights, car trouble and bathroom brawls. Years of miscommunication, frustration and comically awkward attempts at bonding come to a head as the mismatched trio make their way from Ohio back home to Houston to reunite the family.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

With his mother (Mary Steenburgen) facing surgery, Carlton (Justin Timberlake) and his friend Lucy (Kate Mara) travel to Ohio to round up his estranged father, Kyle (Jeff Bridges), a baseball legend. Michael Meredith's comedy-drama follows the unlikely trio on an emotionally awkward road trip back to Texas. As the miles unfold before them, father and son begin a journey of reconciliation in the hopes of healing old wounds.

Jeff Bridges is remarkable as Kyle Garrett, the absent father who loves himself and his fame more than his family. Mary Steenburgen is wonderful every time she appears on screen as the dying mother, Katherine. Then there is Kate Mara as Lucy who adds a great level of depth to her own character and those she interacts with throughout. Just a simple smile from her and you melt. Lastly, we have Justin Timberlake (Carlton Garrett). As the son who must come to terms with his absentee father and discover what he truly wants out of his life he is adequate on screen.

The DVD comes packed with a commentary from director Michael Meredith and Jeff Bridges. There's also a look behind the scenes at the production. If that wasn't enough, the theatrical trailer has also been included. It's everything that every DVD should be. Well, in terms of supplementals. The film itself is worth a rental.
